Silicosis and Engineered Stone: A Research Agenda for Safety Solutions
Exposure to respirable crystalline silica (RCS) from engineered stone has led to severe respiratory health outcomes, particularly among young workers. Used in countertops and other various surfaces, engineered stone can contain up to 95% silica and when cut or ground, can pose significant health risks. Australia has now banned engineered stone with over 1% silica due to rising silicosis cases in workers exposed to its dust.
Further bans and measures aimed at reducing exposure through safer materials and enhancing protective measures could prevent further silicosis cases and protect workers in high-risk occupations.

Opioid Use and Occupation
Opioid use is a growing concern in many occupations, particularly for roles involving physical labour, high injury rates, or workplace stress. It directly affects worker health, safety and productivity. Research has shown that workers in industries such as construction, healthcare, transportation, and manufacturing are more likely to be prescribed or use opioids due to work-related injuries or stress.
While current research addresses the intersection of opioid use and occupational health, knowledge gaps remain. This Topic Collection aims to highlight the recent findings in this area, explore future research directions, and highlight evidence-based strategies to mitigate opioid misuse and improve worker health and safety.
